Maine Learning Results Alignment
Maine Learning Results: Health Education & Physical Health Education -A. Health Concepts
A6. Basic Health Concepts
Grades 9-Diploma
Students analyze complex health concepts related to family life, nutrition, personal health, safety & injury prevention; and tobacco, alcohol, & other drug use prevention.

Rationale: Students will be completing a webquest which will have them reflect on their own nutrition and ask them to reflect on their family’s nutrition as well.

Assessment

Formative (Assessment for Learning)
Students will be asked to complete a nutrition webquest that will be provided online. This webquest will have students learn about the importance of eating healthy and learn about the health risks that go with being obese/overweight. Once students have completed the webquest they will be asked to evaluate their own diet as well as their families. This will allow students to apply what they already know about eating right and exercise and learn about the different health risks due to being overweight/obese. Students will also be able to evaluate their families’ nutrition and decide if they need to make any changes. Students will meet again as a class and share what they learned about their own nutrition and their families and talk about how eating right can help you have a happier, longer and more productive life. Students will be observed on how they worked completing the webquest and assessed on their participation during the class discussion.

Summative (Assessment of Learning)
Students will first be assessed on how they participated during the class as well as on their completion of the webquest. Students will also be assessed on how well they evaluated their own diet as well as their families. Students will receive a total of 30 points if they completed the webquest and participated in class. Students will also be assessed on whether or not they were able to use the information they received from the webquest and use it to reflect on their own nutrition choices.

Integration
Technology: I will use technology in a type II way by having students complete a webquest during class which gives them the opportunity of working on a laptop.
Inquiry: Students will be exposed to the essential question of why eating healthy is so important and what health risks they face from not having proper nutrition. Students will be asked to develop a deeper understanding by applying this content area to their own life.
Reading: Students will have to read, understand and comprehend multiple texts throughout this webquest.

Groupings
During this class period students will be given the opportunity to work with a partner or work alone on this webquest. Students will be allowed to ask each other questions and have discussions with each other but each student in the class is being asked to complete it in order to receive the 30 points. All students are being asked to reflect on their own personal nutrition choices as well as their families.

Differentiated Instruction

Strategies
Logical-Mathematical: Students will be looking at healthy calorie intake numbers and unhealthy fat percentages and use that to assess the amount of fats and calories they consume.
Intrapersonal: Students will reflect on their own nutrition and the nutrition of their families and be asked to complete the webquest on their own.
Interpersonal: Although students are asked to complete an individual webquest they are still given the opportunity to ask peers questions/input and will be given the opportunity to take part in a class discussion.
Bodily-Kinesthetic: Students will be allowed to get up to consult with peers and walk around the classroom and also when students are asked to get up and grab a computer as well as type on that computer.
Linguistic Students will read the article on obesity which I will hand out at the beginning of class as the hook.
Spatial: Students are asked to think about why the obesity rate in America is so high compared to the rest of the world and students will be looking at the visuals when completing the webquest.

Modifications/Accommodations
I will review student’s IEP, 504 or ELLIDEP and make appropriate modifications and accommodations. Students who miss class will be asked to see me as soon as they are well so we can review what they missed. I will provide the student with a copy of the obesity article which I handed out to the class and then explain the webquest that they missed. Students will be asked to complete the webquest on their own time. A sheet will be provided for them on the webquest so that they don't feel lost. Then students will be asked to write a short reflection on the webquest and reflect on their own nutrition/families nutrition. This will give students the opportunity to make up the participation points that they missed from being absent. Absent students will be given 2 days for everyday they are absent to complete this assignment and must be responsible for remembering to turn it in. Points will be deducted everyday it is late.

Extensions
I will be using type II technology by having students complete the online webquest. This webquest gives students the opportunity to learn about the health risks that come with being obese/overweight and learn how to prevent them. It also allows them to reflect on their own nutrition. (Type I) By using the webquest the students are given the opportunity to do this in a fun and interesting way as well as work with laptops. (Type II)

Maine Standards for Initial Teacher Certification and Rationale

Standard 3 - Demonstrates a knowledge of the diverse ways in which students learn and develop by providing learning opportunities that support their intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and cultural development.
Rationale: I will provide students with a safe and positive environment for students to work. They will respect one another and a mutual respect will be created between me and all students. The lesson plan will be organized and students will understand what is expected of them and what procedures they will be doing. Students will be given the full class period to complete the lesson and all students will understand that they are expected to complete the webquest even though they may work with other students.

Standard 4 - Plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, curriculum goals, and learning and development theory.
Rationale: At the beginning of this lesson students are given basic facts on being obese and asked to use that information throughout the webquest. Students will develop knowledge of a healthy BMI and calorie intake and use that to apply it to their own life. This will allow students to use the knowledge they have learned and apply it to real life.

Standard 5 - Understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies and appropriate technology to meet students’ needs.
Rationale: I use six different multiple intelligences during this class in order to meet my student’s needs. I will walk around during class to answer students questions, allow students to ask one another questions and use the internet for further research. This will help to make the class more interactive.
Standard 8 - Understands and uses a variety of formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and support the development of the learner.
Rationale: Students will be assessed during the class to make sure they are completing the assignment. Students will also then be assessed by how much they participate during class. Students will formally be assessed by the total points which they receive. Students can receive a total of 30 and must complete the webquest, reflect on their nutrition and participate in the class discussion to receive the complete 30 points.
Teaching and Learning Sequence:
Class Agenda:
Greet Class
Pass out facts on obesity
Have quick discussion
Have student grab computers
Help students complete webquest

When students arrive to class they will take their seats. I will give students time to settle in. The classroom will be arranged in rows and each student will have their own desk. I will then pass out to each student on article on obesity and the risks that go with being unhealthy as well as a factual worksheet. After a quick discussion on the importance of eating right and exercising, students will be given a laptop that they can use in order to complete a webquest. This webquest will be asking students to calculating their BMI and answer various questions regarding their own health. There are 5 steps however students may skip step # 4. Students can talk with one another and answer each other's questions but every student will be asked to complete the webquest. By learning about the risks which go with eating unhealthy and not exercising students will be able to grasp an understanding that the choices they make affect them later in life and learn about the health risks they face due to unhealthy nutrition. What, Where, Why, Hook, Tailor: Visual, Verbal, and Mathematical.

Through completing the webquest students will know key factual information about being obese and the health risks that go with it and students will also know what types of diets and exercise plans can lead to obesity. This lesson will be addressed in a way so that students understand the importance of eating right and exercising, yet not making them feel bad about themselves. It is meant to make them think about how they can improve their own health choices. While student are completing the webquest I will be going around and answering any questions which they have. This will allow me to make sure that students understand the material and once students have completed the webquest, they will be asked to fill out a short questionnaire on what they have learned. Equip, Tailor: Verbal, Visual and Mathematical.

Students will be mainly working alone throughout all of this class period. They will be allowed to talk with one another and assist one another but each student will be asked to complete the webquest. The webquest will be asking students questions about their own eating habits as well as their families. This will get students thinking about the facts which they learned on the importance of eating right and exercising and have them explore information on their own diet. They will also be asked to assess their own diet and what changes they may need to make. Students will also be asked to complete a worksheet about the webquest which will help to show me evidence of what they have learned throughout the class. Also asking questions and completing the webquest will provide me with evidence of what they have learned. Once all students have completed the webquest they will be asked to take part in a discussion and talk about what they learned about their own nutrition and their families and discuss why it is important to exercise and eat healthy. Explore, Experience, Rethink, Revise, Tailor: Verbal, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Bodily-kinesthetic

This assignment will allow student to self-assess their own diet as well as their families. They can think about ways to improve their diet and what changes they can make in order to eat healthier. Students will be evaluated through their completion on the webquest, their participation in the class discussion and completion of the review sheet. Students will be allowed to help one another throughout the webquest but each student will be expected to complete the webquest. Evaluate.
